Rabbit anti Human heme oxygenase 1 antibody recognizes human heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a 288 amino acid ezyme with a crucial role in heme catabolism, cleaving the heme ring to form biliverdin which is furhter processed to form bilirubin by a reductase enzyme. HO-1 acitivity is highest in the spleen where it is involved in the processing of senecent erythrocytes (Delaby et al. 2012). HO-1expression can be increased during cellular stress, including heat shock (Ewing et al. 1992). Baseline levels of expression are high in certain tissues, including spleen and liver. Enriched enzyme preparations are recommended for experimental analysis.

Heme oxygenase, an essential enzyme in heme catabolism, cleaves heme to form biliverdin, which is subsequently converted to bilirubin by biliverdin reductase, and carbon monoxide, a putative neurotransmitter. Heme oxygenase activity is induced by its substrate heme and by various nonheme substances. Heme oxygenase occurs as 2 isozymes, an inducible heme oxygenase-1 and a constitutive heme oxygenase-2.
