Prostaglandin E Synthase (PGES) is a membrane associated protein involved in eicosanoid and glutathione metabolism as part of the arachidonic acid signaling pathway. The expression of PGES is induced by the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1B and its activity is glutathione dependent. PGES is also expressed at high levels in P53 expressing cells.

The protein encoded by this gene is a glutathione-dependent prostaglandin E synthase. The expression of this gene has been shown to be induced by proinflammatory cytokine interleukin 1 beta (IL1B). Its expression can also be induced by tumor suppressor protein TP53, and may be involved in TP53 induced apoptosis.
